Colonial Picture Archive (Frankfurt)

This database presents 50,000 digitized historical pictures which cover the whole of Africa.  It consists of the collection of the German Colonial Society (Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft), which includes mainly glass plates, now stored at the Frankfurt University Library. The visitor can also view a collection of photographs, photo albums, and postcards owned by the Sam Cohen Library, located in Swakopmund, Namibia.

Special: included are 24,407 old photographs from Namibia, dating from the 19th and early 20th century.

A striking example is a photograph of the famous Hendrik Witbooi, a king of the Naquama people (end 19th century). More information about Witbooi can be found in Wikipedia.
