2014 Ebola (EVD, Ebola Virus Disease) outbreak in Africa

This information portal on the 2014-2015 Ebola (EVD, Ebola Virus Disease) outbreak in Africa was created by Harro Westra of the African Studies Centre in Leiden and is no longer being updated.

We are however making plans for a page or portal similar to this, concerning health in Africa in general. All in good time...

Although this page was not set up to provide information about the 2019/2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, you may find some links to experts and expert institutions that may be useful.

As of 2014, the most widespread epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in history is currently ongoing in three West African countries. It has caused significant mortality, with a reported case fatality rate (CFR) of about 71%. It began in Guinea in December 2013 and then spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone. A small outbreak of twenty cases occurred in Nigeria, and one case occurred in Senegal. The latter two countries were declared disease-free on 20 October 2014 after a 42 day waiting period. Secondary infections of medical workers have occurred in the United States and Spain but have not spread further. One imported case has been identified in Mali with two more possible cases under investigation. An independent outbreak of EVD in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that started in August 2014 has been shown by genetic analysis to be unconnected to the main epidemic.
